Frequently Asked Questions

When will I receive commencement information?

Commencement packets are due to be mailed in early April to all students who have applied for their degree/certificate for the Fall 2014, Spring 2015 and Summer 2015 semesters.  This packet will contain all the details regarding the commencement ceremony.

Do I have to reserve a seat?

We make arrangements for all students to attend. You do not need to notify us whether or not you are attending commencement.

Can I walk in May if I graduate in the summer?

Yes.  You will need to submit a Commencement Participation Petition for Summer Graduates. This form is available with your Academic Advisor. Once your advisor signs the form verifying that you are eligible to apply to graduate in the Summer, the form should be turned in to the VPSS office in DASR 106.

What if I have a balance with NMSU?

Even if you have a balance with NMSU you can take part in commencement.  However, your certificate/diploma will not be ordered until your balance is paid.  Once your hold is lifted, you will need to notify the VPSS office (527-7530) for your certificate and the NMSU Registrar's office (646-4796) for your diploma.

How long does the commencement ceremony last?

Our ceremony lasts about 2 hours.

What color are the caps and gowns?

Our caps and gowns are black.

Where can I buy my cap and gown?

You can purchase your cap, gown and tassel at the NMSU Barnes & Noble bookstore. They will be available May 4-8.

Where can I get announcements/invitations?

DACC does not sell announcements. You have several choices: purchase them at the NMSU Barnes & Noble bookstore (will have NMSU's logo instead of DACC); purchase them on-line from companies such as Jostens; make your own.

Can I be recognized as a Crimson Scholar?

According to the NMSU Honors College, students who earn 38 credit hours while they are a Crimson Scholar and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above for the semester before graduation will be recognized at commencement.  DACC’s Crimson Scholars wear a red tassel and have a “CR" printed by their name in the program.

How do I get my Crimson Scholar tassel?

A list of graduates who are eligible to wear a Crimson Scholar tassel will be provided to the NMSU Bookstore. Once they verify that you are on the list, they will give you a red tassel instead of the red/black/white tassel.

Will it show on my transcript that I am a Crimson Scholar?

According to the NMSU Honors College, students who earn 45 credits hours while they are a Crimson Scholar and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above at the end of your last semester, will have “Crimson Scholar Graduate” printed on their transcript.

What if I am earning more than one degree/certificate?

You will be recognized for each. You will walk across the stage once, but each degree/certificate will be announced. Also, you will be listed in the program for each degree/certificate.
