Dona Ana Community College Students Receive Statewide Honors

SANTA FE – Dona Ana Community College (DACC) students Mandy McGrath and Lester Gale Reynolds were named to the New Mexico All USA Academic Team for their outstanding academic accomplishments and community service.  Awards were given in Santa Fe as part of Community College day at the New Mexico State Legislature. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an honor society for two year institutions sponsored the awards. The Alpha Omega Tau chapter at DACC nominated the students. As a result of the honor McGrath and Reynolds will receive a scholarship to a four year university of higher education. The local Alpha Omega Tau chapter is advised by faculty members Krista Kozel, Amy Garcia, and Linda Skalic who believe the chapter is very important for DACC students who wish to excel in studies and service to others.

“Mandy and Lester are great representatives of DACC,” Interim Campus President Andrew J. Burke said. “Their scholarly approach to their future reflects the hard work, community service, and academic excellence of many of our students.”

Reynolds is a 44 year old first generation college student from Las Cruces. He is currently attending New Mexico State University (NMSU) having completed his Associate of Arts degree at DACC.  After earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology, Reynolds plans to pursue a Master’s degree at NMSU and then earn his doctorate at the University of New Mexico. He is married, has one son with another expected this summer. Reynolds has been and continues to be awarded and recognized as an outstanding student by many different societies and professional organizations. He is a 10-year veteran of the Army National Guard.

McGrath is a 22-year old resident of Las Cruces. After graduating from DACC she will seek two degrees at NMSU. Always wanting to help others, she will seek a degree in Dental Hygiene and after attaining that will earn a Master’s in Social Work. She will eventually become a drug rehabilitation therapist.

According to the PTK website, “each two-year college in New Mexico may nominate two students per campus to the All-USA Academic Team. Students from New Mexico nominated to the national team comprise the All-New Mexico Academic Team. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community.”
