Goal Statment

The developmental English courses (DE) are intended to "prepare students who wish to pursue an academic degree and to help those who wish to develop basic skills for use on the job or in their personal lives" (DABCC Catalog).  Placement is determined by ACT or Compass scores and confirmed by diagnostic writing in the first weeks of the semester. 

Intended Outcomes

  • All students who pass DE 105N are able to perform at a predetermined minimum skill-level.  
  • Students who pass DE 105N will perform as well or better than students placed directly into DE 110N.   All students who pass DE 110N are able to perform at a predetermined minimum skill-level.  
  • Students who pass the DE program will perform as well or better than students placed directly into English 111G. 

Assessment Procedures 

  • All students who pass DE 105N must first pass a program wide common exit process to demonstrate minimum skill proficiency.  
  • A transcript audit will demonstrate that passing DE 105N students do as well or better than students placed directly in DE 110N.  
  • All students who pass DE 110N must first pass a program wide common exit process to demonstrate minimum skill proficiency.  
  • A transcript audit will demonstrate that passing DE students do as well or better than students placed directly in English 111G.
