Responding to our communty needs

In 1984, Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County (LV-DAC) was founded as a community response to local needs. Our non-profit organization utilizes trained volunteers to provide FREE one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing, or English language skills.

Our non-profit organization utilizes trained volunteers to provide FREE one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing, or English language skills. LV-DAC works closely with Adult Basic Education. We offer tutoring for adults who have literacy skills at the most basic levels.

The rest of our funding comes from concerned individuals. If you can make a donation, please contact our literacy coordinator: 575.527.7641.

We give preference to the least educated. Instruction is individualized and based on the real-life needs of learners. LV-DAC has tutoring sites throughout Doña Ana County, and our services are FREE to both the learners and the volunteers.

LV-DAC works closely with local, state, and national adult education partners. We are a component of Adult Basic Education at Doña Ana County Community College. LV-DAC is accredited by ProLiteracy America, and is a member of the statewide New Mexico Coalition for Literacy.

Funding

LV-DAC is funded in part by grants from Adult Basic Education of DACC and the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy.

Who we serve

Our program primarily serves ESL students who had less than six years of formal education in their home country, and students who speak English but read and write at less than the sixth grade level.

Students who come to LV-DAC are pre-assessed to determine their level. LV-DAC matches eligible students with trained volunteer literacy tutors. A student will generally meet her/his tutor for 2-4 hours a week, and together they work on the educational goals that the student has identified.

Our tutoring services are free, and student information is kept confidential. If you know a low literacy adult who needs help learning basic reading, writing, or English, please call (505) 527-7544 or stop by the Quintana Learning Center at DACC. Current Students: Fill out a Learner Evaluation Form.
